Pipe Freezing for Repairs in Industrial Plants

Keep production moving while repairs are made. Cryo Tech Pipe Freezing offers a safe, reliable method to isolate pipe sections without full shutdowns, reducing downtime, minimizing risk, and keeping costs predictable.

Introduction to Industrial Plant Pipe Freezing

Cryo Tech Pipe Freezing provides industrial facilities with a proven solution to safely isolate pipe sections for repair.  This process eliminates the need to drain entire systems or take lines out of service. By utilizing liquid nitrogen and specialized freeze equipment, we create a temporary ice plug. This ice plug effectively stops the flow of liquid. This allows your team to replace valves, add tie-ins, or swap components confidently. We safely freeze pipes up to 36 inches in diameter on liquid-filled, no-flow lines. The result is less downtime, lower risk, and tighter control of schedule and cost.

Founded in 2017 by David Anderson, Cryo Tech aims to be the safest and most reliable option for pipe freezing. We offer our services at a reasonable cost. We are the top pipe freezing experts in the Northeast. We serve industrial clients all over the United States. Expect experienced technicians, clean setups, methodical documentation, and steady communication in live production environments.

Why Industrial Plants Choose Pipe Freezing

Industrial sites operate on thin margins where every hour of downtime matters. Pipe freezing supports those realities.

No Plant-wide Shutdowns

Isolate only what you need. Keep adjacent equipment, utilities, and process lines online.

Cut Chemical Loss and Waste

Avoid draining long hydronic loops or process water systems. Save on treatment chemicals, heat energy, and disposal.

Short, Predictable Outages

Plan overnight or weekend windows that fit your changeover schedule. Freeze, repair, and return to service in a controlled sequence.

Lower Total Cost

Less labor for drain, refill, purge, and rebalancing. Fewer areas are idled. Fewer trades impacted.

Documented Safety

Job Hazard Analysis, method statements, and COI aligned with your EHS, PSM, and contractor onboarding requirements.

How an Industrial Freeze Project Runs

01.

Scope & Planning

We review P&IDs or walk the space with your maintenance lead. We confirm pipe size, medium, access, and the repair sequence that will set the outage length.

02.

Safety & Compliance

We follow LOTO plans and obtain hot work permits when necessary. We also adhere to plant access rules. For sprinkler work, we coordinate impairment permits and ensure a fire watch is established. For regulated operations, we assist with PSM and MOC submissions.

03.

Method Statement & JHA

You receive written procedures, freeze points, monitoring methods, a communication tree, and emergency considerations. COI and W-9 are available on request.

04.

Setup & Protection

Our technicians install engineered freeze heads or jackets. They establish no-flow conditions, set up stage barriers and mats, and protect finishes and equipment.

05.

Freeze & Monitoring

We introduce liquid nitrogen and build the ice plug while monitoring temperatures and site conditions. We do not release the line until the plug has proven strength for the planned scope.

06.

Repair Window

Your crew performs the valve change, tie-in, or component swap. A Cryo Tech technician remains on the freeze point and communicates with your lead throughout.

07.

Controlled Thaw & Return To Service

We thaw the plug in a controlled manner, assist with venting, verify flow and leak checks, and support refill and balancing steps. A brief closeout note is provided.

Industrial Specific Benefits

When DIY Kits Are Not Enough

We discourage DIY freezing kits for industrial plants. Field conditions vary, and the stakes are high. Pipe metallurgy, wall thickness, fluid chemistry, and line orientation all affect plug behavior. Production areas add heat loads and vibration that DIY gear cannot manage. Industrial projects demand professional equipment, redundant monitoring, and experienced judgment. Our crews read the freeze correctly, adjust in real time, and protect your schedule.

What To Have Ready

Example Use Cases

  • Condenser water butterfly valve change at a power block
Freeze a 14-inch main, swap the valve, and restore flow before the next shift.

  • Process water tie-in for a new filler line in the food and beverage industry
Create a controlled freeze plug, cut in the tee, sanitize, and return to validated operation.

  • Heating hot water header repair in a pharmaceutical utility corridor
Isolate a branch, replace corroded fittings, and maintain temperature stability for adjacent suites.

  • Sprinkler main repair over a production floor
Coordinate impairment and fire watch, freeze the line, replace a failed section, and clear the work area before start-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you freeze lines with glycol or brine?

Yes. We routinely freeze glycol and brine systems. We will confirm concentration, temperature, and expected freeze time during planning.

Do you freeze flammable or solvent lines?

Many solvents present additional hazards. We evaluate compatibility, ventilation, and classification. If conditions are not safe or compliant, we will not proceed. We will help you consider alternatives.

Will freezing damage the pipe?

No. When performed by trained technicians with proper equipment, the process is safe for standard piping materials. We assess age, condition, supports, and loads before work begins.

How long will the freeze hold?

As long as needed for the planned repair, provided no flow is maintained, and conditions match the plan. We monitor continuously.
