How do you know when the pipe is frozen?
We use many instruments to verify ice formation throughout the freezing process, including pyrometers, thermocouples, thermal imaging devices.
Why doesn’t the pipe crack when we freeze?
Pipes crack when the ice grows without space to expand. This is usually a closed valve or another ice formation. Cryo Techs technicians are trained to ensure proper spacing and pressure venting to avoid this issue
Whats the biggest pipe we can freeze?

While pipe freezing has no size limit, we currently offer pipeline freezing services up to 36” in diameter.

How long does a freeze plug last?
We are able to hold your freeze for as long as you require! During the scheduling process you can choose how much time you will require for your repair or upgrade work.
Are there alternatives to pipe freezing?
Draining the entire system or using isolation valves are alternatives to pipe freezing. This will time-consuming, labor-intensive and may cause disruptions.
How many freeze plugs does my project require?

For a single freeze, we freeze a single point on the line and this means you can mechanically hold back one side. Each freeze will provide a single point of blockage in the line which can be used in the case where one side of the line can be drained. By having two (double freeze) isolation points, you allow a section between the two plugs for modifications.

Is pipe freezing safe?
Pipe freezing is very safe when performed correctly. There are many factors such as temperature, flow, pressures, product in service, location, etc. that can influence the safety of a pipe freeze. Cryo Tech has parameters and requirements that we ensure are met before any project to make sure every freeze is as safe as possible.
What area does Cryo Tech service?

We service the northeastern continental US daily, with select projects worldwide.

How cold will the pipe freeze get?
We use liquid nitrogen to perform all of our freezes. Liquid nitrogen is around -320 degrees F. We will typically bring most freezes down to around -100 degrees F during plug formation.
Does the pipe become brittle?
When most people hear liquid nitrogen, they picture a shattering flower in a high school lab. The reality is that when a pipe gets brought into and out of cryogenic temperature ranges in a controlled manner, It becomes a form of “heat treating” leaving the area stronger than it began.
When can I use pipe freezing on a project?

The range and use of pipe freezing is quite adaptable. Allowing our customers to repair or upgrade equipment without the usual shutdowns and draining.
